Pallars SobiràWhere history is alive
The history of Pallars Sobirà started in prehistory, when the first humans settled in the region. Even though those first inhabitants lived here very long ago, they left a legacy in the shape of dolmens and megalithic monuments that remind us of the most remote origins of the region.
However, the greatest time for Pallars was the five-hundred-year period of the earldom of Pallars, the most long-standing earldom in Catalonia. The earldom began in the year 920 and lasted until 1487 when the castle of València d'Àneu surrendered along with the legendary earl Hug Roger III.
In the 20th Century, Pallars Sobirà's society started a process of modernization when many hydroelectric power stations were built in the region right before the Spanish Civil War. From 1960 to 1980 the region suffered a second crisis that led to a critical wane of the population.
Since the 1990's tourism has been changing the situation in the region. Adventure sports, ski resorts and nature reserves have become a key element in the blooming regional economy, in which traditional activities like agriculture and livestock farming are still important.
