Estany de Montcortés

Included in the PEIN (Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural de Catalunya- Natural Interest Landscape Plan of Catalonia)). It is the only pond in the region that has a Karstic topography, not glacial like the rest of ponds and lakes. Its waters come from an internal source which is between 20 and 40 metres deep approximately. This lacustrine area is one of the most important natural reservoirs for wading birds in the Pyrenees, and it holds many migratory species, such as mallards, ospreys and snipes. In addition, it contains a huge diversity of flora and fauna species, some of the with little representation in the Pyrenean territory. Taking the pond as a starting point, there are many itineraries to be tracked, swimming and fishing are also allowed.

Estany de Montcortés

Timetable: Open to visitors

How to get here: From Gerri de la Sal, towards Sort, we must take the county road off the left, in a U-turn heading to La Pobleta de Bellvehí. The pond is 12 km ahead.
